It's a new year. We have over a dozen projects in the cooker right now. Here's a quick little list: Gary Baseman, Craola, Hasbro, FriendsWithYou, Joe Ledbetter and more! It's been great organizing the year with our factory team in China. Our partners are getting ready for the New Year - Year of the Dragon - I decided to pop in before everyone went on break to organize and smooth out the details. First up - Joe Ledbetter - Burger Bunny Wood 10" collectible (expect color ways *hint hint*). Next, Joe Ledbetter Bop Bag inflatable - Looks a lot like a 60" tall Burger which you can punch feverishly at pesky calories. Also, Sam Flores 5' tall Kid Dragon (would it look good in gold?) - you'll find out! Gary Baseman - the Buckingham Warrior - Wow! This piece is epic. 10" tall of Baseman brilliance and coming this April (stay tuned for pics). Next for this first quarter - remember Joe Ledbetter's Fire Cat? Thought about ever owning a 50" tall one in fiberglass? You'll find out this April/May.

We're in the airport now, leaving for Manila, Philippines where we'll join Joe and Big Boy from Secret Fresh. I've been told the Burger Bunny had sold out days ago and the fans in Manila are going nuts awaiting Joe's arrival. It feels good to be working with our team and retail partners, even though we're so far away from home, nonetheless, we still feel at home. 2012 is stacking up to be a great year and what greater way to kick it off than a 50 piece 10" tall Wood Bunny release starring Joe Ledbetter. I'm happy to be here. I'm happy for the experiences. For the relationships. For the opportunities. Life is amazing. Carpe Diem.

GRAY KID DRAGON EDITION IS HERE!

I got to be honest - When the delivery truck showed up with the shipment, it was like Christmas Morning. David and myself unloaded the shipment, cracked open a few boxes and I swore, I saw lights from heaven shoot out of those boxes. Not suggesting any religious under, over or even middle tones but the unveiling of the Large Format Kid Dragon was somewhat a moving experience. We had labored over the production of these beautiful replicas for months, obsessing over each detail. The Kid Dragon was first featured as a figurative painting from Sam Flores. We wanted to retain that ethereal, melancholic and painterly aesthetic that is Sam Flores. I believe we achieved it. It's as if the two dimensional image covered in its harmonious layers of paint jumped from the canvas and into a three dimensional reality. You need to see it to believe it. And you can, by going to the Kid Robot Store in LA. The Kid Dragon is featured right in the center on an equally lucid, under lit incandescent, triptych platform. It's truly a beautiful sight. BURGER BUNNY

Joe Ledbetter has a brilliant imagination. Most notable when it comes to his mutations on one of his most beloved character - Mister Bunny (Bunny, Mutant Bunny, Colossus Bunny) - it goes by many names, nonetheless, each mutation is as delicious as the previous.

Delicious? Literally. Burger Bunny. Need I say more? Two all "something" patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, tomato on a sesame seed bun? Which can hop? Mind blowing. You'll have to catch him if you want to eat him.

This delicious and seemingly happy beast stands 10" tall, is made of wood and is an edition of 50. In case you are uncomfortable eating that patty next to the cheese, feel free to rearrange the order - because, you CAN! How cool is that!? Perfect for any OCD burger enthusiast.

I met Laurie Lipton through a mutual friend (thank you Sean Sorensen). I was familiar with her meticulous and masterful pencil drawings. Mind blowing. You can calculate all adjectives when describing Laurie's renderings; patient, confident, deliberate, soft, hard, fluid, coarse, intense, illuminate, disciplined, unwavering, free, hysterical, horrifying, honest, enlightened, transformed, comedic, absurd and existential. Her work has been shown all over the world and frequently finds its way to the homes of several prestigious collectors - like the one who was kind enough to lend a quote on Ms. Lipton.

I thought it would be a great idea to work with Laurie - work on something more achievable, more attainable to a wider range collector, however, still maintaining its collectability and hopeful appreciation. The original Love Bite sold for tens of thousands of dollars - I wanted to present an option that was under $300 but had the same feel as an appreciating art multiple. Thus, the Love Bite print. The print is 24" x 34" (BIG). The giclee is printed on archival rag paper, each hand signed and numbered by Laurie Lipton. Only 213 are in existence.

About the print: The image might be jarring but its intent is brilliant. Playing on the age old Grimm's-esque Tale - "You're so cute, I could just eat you!" I'm sure that every child had an aunt that said that. This is a fantastical literalism, although laced with humor and intense observation (look at the nails on 'ole granny)! Everything is very deliberate, and in the throws of preemptive drama, creating unique narratives to whomever is viewing the piece. The juxtaposition is the satire.

WRECKS AND DAZEY LAVA EDITION

To all the loyal Joe Ledbetter fans in this brilliant, fantastical world - Joe brings you yet another Lava Edition! This one coming from Joe via Analog Playset. Analog Playset is Tony Thaxton's project, drummer of Motion City Soundtrack. Joe happens to be fans of the band and the band, fans of Joe. Just so happens that Joe Ledbetter had created the key art for MCS' last studio album, 'My Dinosaur Life'. The art centers around the Wrecks and Dazey characters - a loveable Tyrannosaurus Rex and his pollinating bee pal, Dazey. Fitting and apropos Darwin statement, even if unintentional - out with the dinosaurs and in with new - i.e. the bee and it's pension for pollinating and redistributing opportunities for life. OCCUPY LOVE!

I have two different brains (figuratively speaking). Those who know me well, know that I definitely am a student of the world. My interests turn into experimentation, eventually turning into love, passion and a trust for the process. I have a range of interests in somewhat of a hobbyist's exploration, looking to refine; literature, politics, art, music, history, and the natural - living - universe that surrounds me. You get the point. This blog isn't set up to be an essayist's etymological porn chest, but every now and then it's fun to explore past the expectations and invisible boundaries that press up on the hallowed walls of The Loyal Subjects (which is certainly an extension of myself and certainly dons generalities of my personality).

There's a lot to be said in regards to certain decompositions that have been evolving for the last 40 years. Eventually, the weight becomes too much to bare and that proverbial house of cards will start collapsing. As we are seeing today with certain inequities, Corporate bullying, the credit and housing markets surrendering to breaking points, etc.

As more and more people are disenfranchised with certain systems and "promises" failing to meet expectations, it is almost certain that some people will voice their concerns. Eventually pushing back. It's what we do. This is what we are seeing from the OCCUPY Movement. We all have our opinions on what this OCCUPY concept means and how it's being executed - I certainly have mine. In the positive action there are also components of negative action and reaction pouring from boiled over frustrations. OCCUPY LOVE is an action and reaction. The idea - LOVE is the foundation for everything in our human multiverse - it's the foundation and structure for; intelligence, education, compassion, dignity, respect, selflessness, generosity, symbiosis, understanding, growth and enlightenment. If it's so, that we all need to be reminded how we can all benefit and grow, possibly redefining what it means to show compassion - perhaps the OCCUPY LOVE shirt is just a very small reminder and subsequent flicker of luminosity - an undeniable message. 15 additional values fortify the spine of the shirt. I always had a fascination with those old school bags - you know the ones - those stand up punching bags we had when we were kids? They essentially were big inflatable Weebles (bc Weebles never Wobble...or something like that). I think I had a Mickey Mouse one. I would channel my sugar high and I would start getting medieval on that sucker! Here I am, 30 some odd years later, still thinking about that sugar high and still down for those bop bags. So, I made one! With FriendsWithYou! A perfect fit, right? Super happy, experiential and sculptural art with plumes of happy go lucky feelings oozing out of it's rainbow spectrum. Seemed to be a good fit for me. FriendsWithYou already had established themselves as the premiere inflatable artists. If you were at South Beach for Art Basel in the last four years, you may have seen a giant, happy floating creature - that would be FriendsWithYou.

If you're queued into Gary Baseman and his Anthropomorphic Pantheistic imagination then I'm sure you are well aware of his favorite character, Toby. Toby is a cat. A cat that experiences life through all mystic dimensions, including the ones here, on earth. That is probably where you have seen Toby - or you may have seen him documented through his detailed travels, ala the Toby postcards, as seen on Gary Baseman's Facebook page. Toby has been to South America, Russia, Europe, Asia, the Middle East - serious, it's hard to keep up with this cat. His Passport looks like a coupon book from an episode of Hoarders.

I feel like it's an understatement when I express that I'm "just" proud of these large format art pieces. I'm beyond proud. The Large Format Kid Dragons are by far, the most beautiful and intricate pieces I have made to date. Obvious, without the lucid and brilliant designs and paintings by Sam Flores, none of this would be possible. I hate overloading the adjective scale with hyperbole and subjective syntax - it's kind of like telling all of your friends that 'Your Kid' is the prettiest, smartest and most talented - but hey, I mean, I'm not that far off! I might add future Class President and perpetual mover and shaker! All metaphors aside, this is truly a brilliant art piece - Koonsian in space - a real art sculpture that will fill a room, fill imaginations and be a much sought after art multiple for years to come. It's not that I had intended to stay off the blog for six months, it's just how life works sometimes. We haven't been away. In fact, we've been working tirelessly - New production schedules, new releases, some releases that you all are familiar with by now and MOVING! We moved into the old Beastie Boys/Grand Royal Records building. Our office mates include Han Cholo, Mad Decent and Diplo and Royal Interactive Productions. The vibe in the building is amazing! There's even original Bode art up on the walls. We're now in Atwater Village (bye, bye Melrose).

OK, Explanations out of the way - now it's time for some blog posts! Also, Pics of the office to come. It's killer!

Analog Playset x Joe Ledbetter = Wrecks and Dazey!

As you know well, the Tohoku region in Japan was hit by the disaster of truly unprecedented scale, and was officially designated as an area affected by “Heavy Disaster”, which enables areas and people stricken by typhoon, earthquake, etc., to receive special relief funds and measures.

Our good friends at Tomenosuke-syoten contacted their affiliated artists and manufacturers who sent them thoughtful messages, they started thinking of organizing a fund-raising sales promotion to make a donation, which can somehow support the sufferers.

Once thought up, best to act now than later. They have named the campaign “TOYS HELP US: the contribution to Tohoku the stricken area of the earthquake” and asked for overseas artists and manufactures for their support. To their happy surprise, they started receiving many positive responses.

The following are the current individual and corporate participants in the campaign:

Here’s the very first look at Pico and Wilshire, the new prehistoric figure set from Joe Ledbetter. Named after the LA streets that cross what was once the natural habitat of the Sabretooth Cat (Pico) and the Wooly Mammoth (Wilshire), this set finds Pico learning first-hand that taking down Wilshire is not going to be as easy as he or his stomach might have hoped. The scale of this struggle is impressive with the massive mammoth standing a towering 12” tall and the embedded Pico measuring out at nearly 6”.
Joe’s dramatic yet humorous design is complimented nicely by the deco which features his trademark black outlines across both Pico and the wide-body Wilshire. This set nicely maximizes the possibilities of the 3D medium with Pico’s sharp teeth and Wilshire’s large tusks and trunk.

Here’s a first look at Joe Ledbetter’s upcoming Magnus and Friday Gradient collector’s set! Drawn from the story told in Joe’s recent solo show, this low-run (198 pcs) edition features smooth gradient blends for some serious eye candy. Rarely seen on production figures, this paint technique sets the new release apart. As with the original set, the Gradient edition features both 3” figures –- Mangus (with hobo sack) and his true love Friday-- each with 3-points of articulation and comes in a window gift box. The History of tokidoki vol I

Tokidoki is a Japanese word whose etymology is, for the most part, vague. The definition can flip from “sometimes” to “constantly”, although the latter’s more appropriate when applied to the flourishing pop-fashion brand tokidoki, as its proprietors are always in motion. Their output is prolific, their hustle grand. You’ve seen their coveted hyper-stylized Karl Lagerfeld 11″ vinyl figures, ubiquitous LeSportsac handbag collection, and their Cactus Friends plush toys — not to mention all their wide-ranging Hello Kitty collaborations — and it’s all the brainchild of tokidoki’s three founders. Even the product line itself is more bi-product than product — a bi-product manifested by those three fairly different personalities with three considerably different backgrounds. The three, however, share one common goal: Success.

The Cliff Notes on the brand tokidoki: The company officially started in 2005 like many an upstart brand, simply selling t-shirts. A cold call to LeSport Sac from tokidoki’s gregarious CEO, Ivan Arnold, resulted in a licensing deal with the handbag company. The handbags adorned with Italian designer Simone Legno’s playful and simplistically stylized characters emotionally connected to young women, and were a booming success — popping up on well-heeled streets, avenues, promenades and parkways across America, proudly strutted by its adoring female contingent. The brand had achieved traction. Next up were similar cold calls resulting in more licensing opportunities including Smashbox, Fornarina (the Italian shoe and apparel company and licensee for the tokidoki store in Milan), Onitsuka, Skullcandy headphones as well as collaborations with Sanrio and its iconic Hello Kitty brand, New Era, frozen yogurt impresarios/hipsters Yogurtland and many more. The brand is now a boutique with hundreds of product SKU’s ranging from toys to pillow cases to collectible watches.

The gamut of tokidoki’s product line are vast and plentiful, but it’s the personalities composing the leadership and actualizers of the brand that are the true product of tokidoki. If the three partners hadn’t randomly and haphazardly found one another, none of this would have been possible. If not for a cold call, a solicitation for a date, and an eventual invitation wrapped in faith — besetting a reluctant young entrepreneur and designer on an adventure starting from his small Italian hometown ultimately landing him in Los Angeles — tokidoki would remain nothing more than a slang word with a dual and vague definition. It’s also noteworthy that the proprietors’ names read more like U.N. ambassadors than cohesive members of a boutique trend-oriented brand: Simone Legno (designer and originator), Ivan Arnold (its hearty CEO) and Pooneh Mohajer (the brand’s COO).

What started it all: tokidoki’s LeSportsac handbag collection

Simone Legno speaks with a distinct and caked Italian accent. Sitting in his office, he is somewhat easier to understand than during our various phone conversations, as traditional Italian hand gestures and peculiar facial tonalities fill the gaps. He exudes a kind energy, usually concerned with the comfort of his guest — certainly a hospitable guy. He’s certainly also an adept promotional guy, adorned head to toe with his brand — complete with an earring set, watch, and perhaps next time even a “heart and crossbone” (tokidoki’s trademarked emblem) eye contacts. Certainly time will tell. Judging from his appearance, it is painfully obvious that he is one with his creation, head-over-heels in love with his creative mindsprings and the fountains they bare. As a walking tokidoki billboard, it is hard not to admire his commitment and adoration to the alternative reality he has created that is now represented on anything which allows printing on its surface.

This commitment and dedication, not only physical but esoteric, to his ideas and characters he creates is the sugar, cherries and dough for this pie mix. It begs the question: “Why Japanese-inspired kawaii images”? You’re Italian for chrissake! Certainly high fashion, Vespas, espressos, vampy red lips, roofless sports cars, futbal (soccer, as we refer to it) and all things stereotypically Italian must have been the points of influence. However, Japanese anime? As far as I see it, Simone’s creations hold less in common with anime than they do with Hello Kitty, but then again, here lies the mystery. Sure, when I was young, we had Sanrio. The girls in school would chew on the bubblegum-scented erasers and flock the halls with lunchboxes and backpacks featuring Hello Kitty and her flat, bold-black outlined iconography. I was aware of it, the brand had certainly imprinted itself in our lexicon of pop culture references, but I personally hadn’t found it an influence.

As Simone explains it, anime and Japanese pop culture influences had seeped through the Italian government-run channels (only a handful of them) in the form of cartoons. Well, yes, this makes sense. Anime cartoon productions are in infinite supply, hurried out to market by several development companies through Japan, China and Korea. The styles are the same: the fantasy worlds, characters, relationships, stories, plots (or lack of them) are all stock. Like a cartoon’ed Commedia dell’arte or Well Made Play. Infinite supply means cheap licensing which equals massive distribution, and Europe was a perfect destination. Simone and his Italian peers, mirroring several trends we had here in the states circa the 1980’s — eg the fantastic world of Saturday Morning and After School Cartoons — were a product of their environment. A blistering and fruitful world of pop culture appetizers and main courses. Something that the youth in my generation fed heartily on, and just as we did (copying images of Popeye, Tom and Jerry, etc), Simone copied the anime images which captured his imagination.

Simone had showed a propensity in his ability to draw, and he carried this creative vice through high school. In Rome, the city in which he grew up, Simone had found a counter culture: underground boutiques which carried punk rock records, t-shirts and skateboard magazines. Influenced by what was readily available to those fringe youths living in LA, NYC, Boston or DC — pertaining to punk, skate and hardcore (fashion, music, and lifestyle) — Simone discovered a new set of influences. And as the Ramones were once imported to England, sewing the seeds of influence for thousands of bands (including the Sex Pistols and Clash), California punks like NOFX and Bad Religion were doing the same for a small set of Italian punk loyalists running about Rome. The next logical step? Start a band and illustrate for zines, of course. And when able to, hang out in squats, smoke hand-rolled cigarettes, swill beer and cheap table wine and attend a punk show, or play one of your own. This is what Simone did, youth in revolt.

Punk was the new Marx Manifesto — exciting, visceral, disguised, energetic and misguided in its expression, yet often heralding messages laden with integrity and equality. Perfect for any artist. Vive le Proletariat! However, the idea of “making a living” soon became more pressing. Post high school Simone attended college, and upon graduating started a business: a web development agency. It is here where Simone fused his love of counter culture kitsch and anime with his education in graphic design and web development. It is here where Simone created tokidoki in his spare time, trading images and ideas with other underground graphic artists, populating and pollinating his tokidoki world with a matrix of pop surrealist artists, toy designers, graphic designers, web developers and general aesthetic hunters via the web platform. Through this network of designers and aficionados, Simone Legno breached the walls of indifference and found himself an audience, collecting a few awards and secret admirers along the way. And looking through the glass of a computer screen on the other side of the world was Ivan Arnold. And if there’s one thing Ivan is able to do, it is identify potential.

"Hiding from the Normals"

Alex Pardee's art show "Hiding from the Normals" was held at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles last week.

The entire show is based off of the beliefs of a man who recently went missing in real life. The man was a supposed crackpot and believes that there is another world living under ours filled with mutants. It is not known if this man is still alive or not.

In addition to creating paintings inspired by this missing man's beliefs, he managed to get his hands on some actual evidence supporting the existence of this world. The evidence and some of the notes & sketches were showcased alongside of the artwork.

Last week Jesse Hernandez and the crew from Vinyl Addiction TV stopped by our headquarters here in Los Angeles to interview us.

Vinyl Addiction TV is a new show all about the Designer Toys/Urban Vinyl Movement which is often referred to as the next art movement. Growing from its early inception in Asia and slowly spreading into a world-wide phenomenon.The show features behind the scenes interviews with artists, companies, collectors,and show coverage.

The host Jesse Hernandez is also an artist his style combines traditional indigenous styles and themes with an urban street sensibility, utilizing bold line work, sharp colors, and dynamic imagery. His work has been published in Maxim, YRB Magazine, Giant Robot, Clutter, Full Vinyl, Flux, Dot Dot Dash,etc...

Last night we went to the legendary Troubadour in Hollywood to see Strong Arm Steady, Planet Asia and The Souls Of Mischief on the 1st stop of there 35 date Montezuma's Revenge Tour.

This weekend we attended Common's annual charity event here in Los Angeles.

His charity is called The Common Ground Foundation and is dedicated to the empowerment and development of the urban youth in the United States.

The concert took place at the historic Hollywood Palladium and featured a huge list of hip hop greats!

There were also a few surprise guests Kanye West, Heavy D, MF DOOM and Queen Latifah!!!

Earlier this year our designer Rafael Santos (www.kards1.com) had the honor of working with Capcom to design a 20th Anniversary Edition Street Fighter Arcade Cabinet.

The cabinet was showcased at a secret star studded Street Fighter IV release party at The Geffen Contemporary at Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, CA.

Thanks to Rafael our logos were included on the Street Fighter Arcade Cabinet!!!!

We arrived early and found this beauty, time to go to work.
But first a look around this amazing space.

The cabinet is set in place and ready for some game play, here comes the crowds.
There were 1000+ people waiting in line for hours....

The stars from the Street Fighter movie were in attendance and stayed longer then the movie did in theaters.

One of my favorite things about Magic for the last few years has been the Mountain Dew Green Label Art Project curated by our friend Hawaii Mike
This year the Green Label Art Project pulled out the big guns and collaborated with: Pushead, Claw Money, UPSO, Nathan Cabrera, Stephen Bliss and Jeff McMillan.

Each artist gets to design their own limited edition Mountain Dew Artist Series Bottle.

The best part is that all the artists were at Magic signing their bottles for the long lines of fans.

Thanx to Hawaii Mike I was able to skip the line and get my Nathan Cabrera and Pushead bottles signed!
